2026 Reading Borough Council candidates, James Cuggy and Roy Rangarirai, welcomed Ed Miliband to Reading on a visit to key worker housing. The high quality eco-homes built by the Reading Borough Council at the former Arther Hill Pool site for public service workers have very low energy bills and affordable rents, helping people get homes of their own.

Ed, who is the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, recognised the work by Reading Borough Council to provide the new flats for key workers in Park Ward, who otherwise might find it harder to get good quality affordable housing.

The homes have air sourced heat pumps and triple glazing, ensuring lower bills and helping to tackle the climate emergency. Ed Miliband recently announced the Government’s Warm Homes Plan, which should take up to a million people out of fuel poverty by 2030.
