In March 2026, Reading Borough Council workers planted a new cherry tree on the corner of Kidmore and Oakley Roads. Caversham Heights Labour Councillor, Jenny McGrother, and Lead Councillor for Environmental Services and Community Safety, Karen Rowland, lent a hand.

Responding to requests from local residents for a tree in the area, the Caversham Heights Labour team swiftly took action to obtain approval from the Highways Department to plant a tree at the junction. Passersby were moved to see such a beautiful addition to the neighbourhood and impressed by the investment shown in their community by the Caversham Heights Labour team.

Caversham Heights Councillor Jenny McGrother was thrilled to dig for such a lovely reason, she said;

“It’s wonderful we get to make this lovely, long-term contribution”

The Reading Borough Council Tree Strategy, contains ambitious proposals for new tree planting and extension of tree canopy cover in Reading up to 2030, to mitigate climate change effects and to adapt to the climate change that is already occurring, as well as for the many other benefits that trees bring.
