The Labour Party has announced an ambitious £1 billion investment plan to reverse savage Tory cuts to the Sure Start programme.

Launched originally in 1998 Sure Start is credited with boosting improvements in childcare as well as bolstering early education, health and family support.

Labour has dedicated itself to its programme with a series of commitments:

  • 30 hours of free childcare a week for all 2-4 year olds
  • Opening 1,000 new Sure Start centres
  • Providing free school meals for all primary school children to end the stigma of starvation and to ensure no child goes hungry at school

In addition Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, will further outline the party’s plans to radically expand free childcare to 30 hours a week for all 2-4 year olds. The UK currently has some of the most expensive childcare on the planet.

The measures are announced with a series of other pledges including changes to the benefits system which has seen millions forced to turn to food banks simply to survive since 2010.
