Celebrating Older People’s Day
I was glad to speak to Thames Valley TV today about how we’ll be celebrating Older People’s Day in Reading. Older people make a tremendous contribution to the local community. We hold an annual event that aims to celebrate these achievements and offer residents a chance to try a variety of fun and interesting activities, promoting a lively social life and continued fitness.
THe event is organised as a partnership between the council, local charities and a great group of volunteers. This year we are celebrating on Monday 9 October 2017 for an afternoon of events at Rivermead Leisure Complex.
The annual free event celebrates the contribution of older people to our communities. It will kick off at 1pm with a welcome from the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Rose Williams, followed by a performance by Firtree Choir. This will be followed by a range of interactive activities throughout the day including guest speakers, song and dance, choirs, arts and crafts and discussion groups.
There will also be information and advice available from over 50 local organisations, blood pressure checks and taster activity sessions where attendees can try their hand at walking rugby, table tennis, and walking netball.
The focus of this year’s day is to promote good mental health and wellbeing in older people. Many of the presentations and services available will help people to find out more about how they can best live full and satisfying lives – linking in to the Brighter Berkshire campaign
